Convertible car seats are designed to keep very young children safe in the car and are suitable for new born children up until around 4 years old.
For the first 6 months it is safer to mount the convertible seat facing rearward but never on a rear facing seat.
What You'll Need
- Convertible Car Seat
- Anchor point fitting kit, if required
- Extension strap, if required
Tips and Warnings
- Never mount the car seat on a rear facing seat
- Check over all your anchor points and adjustments before driving
Before You Start
Before you start, make sure you read the instruction manual carefully.
Step 1 - Locate Achor Point in Vehicle
Firstly locate your vehicles child restraint anchor point.
This will be located somewhere on the back seat or in the boot area. Check your vehicles manual for the exact location if required.
NOTE: Some vehicles don’t have an anchor pre-attached and you will need to fit an anchor kit.
Step 2 - Adjust Child Harness First
It’s a good idea to adjust the child harness before placing the seat in the vehicle.
When you place your child in the seat the harness should fit comfortably over the child’s shoulders.
Step 3 - Locate the Splitter Plate
To adjust the harness, locate the splitter plate on the back of the seat.
Remove the harness straps from the splitter plate.
Step 4 - Adjust the Length
Adjust the length by pulling them through the harness slots.
When the harness is the correct length re-attach it to the splitter plate.
NOTE: Make sure there aren’t any twists or kinks in the straps.
Step 5 - Place in the Convertible Seat
Place the convertible seat in the back of the car with the stabilising bar pressing firmly against the back of the car seat.
Step 6 - Guide the Tether Strap
Guide the tether strap around both sides of the Convertible seat and over the top of the car seat before securing it to the anchor point.
Step 7 - Lock in the Covertible Seat
To lock the convertible seat in place, attach the tether strap to the child restraint anchor.
Adjust the tether strap to remove any slack but don’t over tighten.
NOTE: The base of the convertible seat should sit flat on the car seat.
Step 8 - Feed the Seatbelt Through
Next, feed the car seatbelt through the seatbelt path indicated and clip the buckle into the correct lock.
Step 9 - Apply Downward Pressure
Apply downward pressure on the convertible seat as you tighten the seatbelt to make sure that you take up all the slack.
NOTE: It’s a good idea to use a locking clip so that the seatbelt can’t move around.
Step 10 - Listen for the Clicks
Once you’re happy that the seat is secure you can place your child in the seat. Use the harness to clip the child into the seat and adjust to make the child comfortable. The harness should be firm but not tight.
NOTE: When clipping your child in, listen for audible clicks to make sure the lock has taken.
